Description
The natural palm, which is a kind of beauty in rural areas of upper Myanmar is called toddy palm. Dry season is the like of toddy palm and wherever we see, in the central Myanmar, it is covered with the toddy palm forest. Toddy palm is a kind of steep palm tree and its usefulness is very wonderful. In this painting, I describe the toddy climber has a dangerous, difficult job, but one in which he takes pride. The climber scales up the tree on two-part bamboo ladder attached to the tree with lashings of bamboo or palm. A bit of wood (ka-laing) is wedged into the crown of the tree to provide seating while he performs his job. The climber scales upwards of fifty trees in a day, going directly from one to the other to retrieve the precious toddy juice. It style is realist and water painting support by paper.
